A Southampton Meadow Still Needs an Edge the Neighbors Can Live With

We get the call from a Southampton or Water Mill neighbor before we get the call from the owner. Someone stopped mowing a rectangle and called it a meadow. By August it is goldenrod, mugwort, and a tick edge against the next lawn. The block hates it. That is not a meadow we would put our name on.

The neighbor reads the edge, not the ecology talk
East End lots sit close enough that a tall, weedy face against a finished lawn looks like a skipped visit. We mow or cut a clean band along the property line, the drive, and the pool fence. That band is the peace treaty. Inside it, the meadow can be messy in a designed way.
HOA and village language about "neat yards" does not require wall-to-wall turf. It does require an edge that looks intentional. Lawn care on the remaining turf has to meet that band every week, not wander into the meadow and scalp the seedlings.
Photograph the line from the neighbor's driveway. If it looks like a forgotten lot, it will be treated as one. We would rather own that photo now than argue in September.
Mugwort in an unmowed lawn is not a native mix
A real meadow on sandy South Fork soil still needs weeds pulled in year one and a cut date in year two. An unmowed fescue lawn fills with the weeds that were already in the thatch. That stand will not become little bluestem because you waited. Garden installation of a meadow is soil prep and seed, then property maintenance that knows which plants stay.
Tick habitat at a tall, unmanaged edge is a guest-weekend problem. We keep a short buffer where people walk. That is not a betrayal of the meadow. It is how the meadow survives the first complaint.
Irrigation leftover on a "meadow" that is still turf weeds just grows taller weeds. Shut that zone off or we will tell you the look will get worse.
Write the mix, the cut, and the complaint line
Before we stop mowing anything, we want the property line, the neighbor's turf, and whether this is a designed meadow or a mowing cut. If it is a cut only, we will say the social cost. If it is a meadow, we put the edge and the first cut on the calendar.
